Road Trip 2017 – Day 3 San Diego to Tucson

4 Aug

Today was a driving day, which began with us picking up my sister at the airport to join us as we headed to New Orleans. After picking her up we met Nikki and Jake in Little Italy for lunch at NaPizza. After a little gluten free pizza and salad we were off. The drive was long with just a stop for gas. When we got to Tucson we headed immediately to the El Charro Cafe in downtown Tucson. The oldest Mexican restaurant in Tucson.

I ended up ordering the Carne Seca, a house specialty. It was funny, when I ordered it the waiter, asks me. "Would you like to try a sample before you order it?". I said no and asked him why. His response was " many people who want to order it don't enjoy it after tasting it.." I told him I would be fine.

So dinner finally arrives and the Carne Seca is placed in front of me. I take a bite and it ends up tasting like shredded Spanish style beef jerky. It's dry!! I grab the salsa, which is pretty good, and put it on top of the meet. All I end up with is shredded beef jerky with salsa on top. While good to eat, I am not sure I would order it again, should I be passing thru Tucson again. If you are, it's worth stopping there because Bobbi and Helen both enjoyed their meals thoroughly. From there we headed to our hotel and checked in for a restful evening,

Road Trip 2017 – Day 2

4 Aug

First full day in San Diego it was off to the Carrillo National Monument in Point Loma. For the morning. While I had been here'd before, I hadn't realized that they had a live lecture in the museum where the lecturer was dressed in period armor and let you try out some of the equipment.

From there we walked to the statue honoring Juan Rodriquez Cabrillo, the Spanish explorer who first explored the California coast.

Next up was the lighthouse on Point Loma. Where the Lighthouse keeper had the nice living quarters within the lighthouse and his assistant basically lived in the barn next door. I am sure it wasn't quite that bad, but it looked like the keepers assistants building was a single room when we toured through it. Most fun in the lighthouse of course was the circular stairwell, which unfortunately didn't let you go all the way to the top, but ended at the living quarters on the 3rd floor.

Next we toured the rest of the point before heading down to the tide pools. Interesting point is that following the bombing of Pearl Harbor the military ended up building coastal defenses at Point Loma in case the Japanese decided to attack San Diego.

If you look closely at the right hand corner of the above picture you can make out the observers pillbox that was used to watch for approaching enemy ships.

Unfortunately for us when we reached the tide pools it was high tide so we were left pool less. So we at least went for a hike for a short look around.

After this off we went to meet Nikki to do a little shopping and then Dinner with her and Jake at Puesto, their favorite restaurant. The highlight of this was the stop in La Jolla for an acai bowl from the Juice Kaboose, one of the best Acai bowls I have ever had. What won me over was the fact that they had gluten free granola which was tasty.

Following dinner it was back to the hotel to pack up and get ready for the real start of our road trip as we drove to Tucson AZ.

Road Trip 2017 – Day 1 – San Diego bound

29 Jul

So the journey begins. We loaded the car with the last few items and were out of the house by 6:06 am. Pretty Darn Good for us. We were back at the house at 6:07 am. I forgot to close the garage door and even though we live in a very safe city and a really quiet neighborhood, leaving the garage door open for 7 weeks was probably not a good idea.

So at 6:07:30 we left the house again and headed off. First stop was Huntington Beach for Helen's hair appointment. Even though it's only a 3.5 hour drive we planned for 5the hours and used 4. The drive through San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties was smooth as one would expect leaving that early. But as we approached Los Angeles county, the traffic became worse and Helen began the white knuckle portion of the journey.

We arrived by 10:15 so we had a little time to wonder through Target before dropping her off for the next 2 hours. Me, I went off to Supercuts to see how big the bald spot was now. My plan was simple, Haircut at Supercuts and then off to Barnes and Noble for an hour to peruse the books.  This plan held together until I reached Supercuts where the single hair stylist looks at me and lets me know that even though there is only one person in building I would have to wait an hour for a haircut. She also strongly hinted that I should leave and come back later. To help with that she tells me that she has scheduled me for a 12:00 pm appointment and she would see me then.

So with nothing to do, I climb in the car, drive to Barnes and Noble, spend only 40 minutes looking through the books (mostly Sci Fi, and why in the heck to they need to mix the fantasy stuff in with it!!)  before leaving to return to Supercuts. After she cuts my hair I am out and back to Helen waiting for to be finished.

Helen comes out of the salon and I ready for our drive to the mortuary to pick out a marker for her parents. No sooner does she climb in the car when she gets a call from the mortuary that they have to reschedule, the person she is meeting is out sick. So instead we are off to SD!

Turns out this worked to sour advantage as we were able to drive down in what passes for minimal traffic and arrive in SD around 3. We checkin at the Marriott Gaslamp District and go to our room. Getting off the elevator we notice that the wallpaper the entire way down the hallway has been peeled back about a foot and was just hanging there. Turns out we missed the water pipe breaking and flooding the hallway about 2 weeks earlier.

So after loading our bags into the room we are off for a walk around San Diego.. We walked to the USS Midway, checked out the Bob Hope Tribute and the statue of the iconic kiss in Time Square at the end of WWII.

The Bob Hope tribute is my favorite as they actually pay snippets from his USO tours over a loudspeaker. Pretty cool. From there we walked pass Nikki's workplace where we texted her and played a game of find the Nikki in the window (we lost) before heading back to the hotel.

We met Nikki and Jake at the Lionfish for dinner. While having dinner, Nikki notices that at the table behind us is one of the Housewives of Orange County. Turns out that she went to high school with Jake but neither said hi to the other they just gave each other "I think I know you looks". After dinner it was back to the hotel and we called it a night.

Road Trip 2016 – The Days Before

5 Aug

Last year when we took our first road trip, we moved out of our rental house putting everything in storage until we returned and moved into our new house in San Louis Obispo. For our second road trip we moved 2 families into their new homes. So on a Saturday, between the husbands and myself we managed to get both families for the most part relocated into their new homes. Both still had a bit to do on the following days but at least all the heavy stuff was relocated.

Because both families were in the middle of their moves, neither one was able to stay in their new homes for the first couple of nights, so we decided to have a family sleepover at our house. What an adventure! It was a little crowded but overall; it wasn’t too bad. The toughest part was the grandkids. Since both families had to spend the daylight hours organizing their homes, YiaYia and Papou (Helen and I) said no problem, we can watch the kids. I mean we figured how tough can it be? We’ve been watching them off and on since they were born, so a couple days straight was no big deal. Or so we thought…

We had raised 3 girls who were close to the same age differences, so this would be easy. What we forgot to take into consideration was sleep schedules and what we’ll call priority attention requirements. In the past when we watched the grandkids they had been on different sleep schedules, not now. To make things interesting Sophia had just gone vertically mobile earlier in the month, so sitting was not a popular activity for her and Elli was busy being herself trying to do everything as close together as possible. Needless to say, they ran us ragged (in a good way). The funniest moment came when we were in the kitchen fixing lunch for the kids and we asked ourselves how in the heck had we managed to survive raising our 3 girls, and then realizing that we would soon be doubling the number of grandkids, Uh-oh.

The Highlight though was that I think during this time that both of our grandkids grew even closer to us and made both of us feel special.  In Yiayia’s case, the highlight was Elli spending a couple of extra nights with us while her parents finished fixing up her room for her. During that time Elli would wake up at 2 or 3 am and start to cry, this would get Helen out of bed and into our office where Elli slept. First she would try and comfort her and if that didn’t work, she would bring Elli to our room and she would have her sleep with us. The first time it happened wasn’t too bad as Elli just laid between our two pillows and slept. The next time Elli was in my bed before I me!! So when I went to bed I pushed back the covers to crawl in and discovered that Elli had decided to sleep in the L formation with her legs filling up my side of the bed!

For me, I cherished the fact that both kids would come to me to be picked up. Only problem was that once one was picked up, the other one would show up and insist on the same honor. I began thinking that if this kept up where in the heck was I going to carry the next two when they arrived….

All in all it was a great way to spend the 4 days before we left for St. Louis, though it was a little sad leaving them there for the next 26 days while we were gone.

I know why they call it ‘Mad’rid

4 Aug

We spent 4 nights in Madrid and the city is… frustrating for a celiac.

We arrived late in the day and decided to just walk around a bit to get the lay of the land. After walking for a while we decided to get ourselves something to eat, so we found a nice outdoor restaurant in the square we were in and went up to get a table. Well the gentleman that greeted us spoke very little English. So we let him know that I was “celiacos” and did they have anything I could eat, a look of horror came over his face and he tells us no they have nothing we can eat. We ask for a menu and lo and behold we quickly find a few items we can enjoy so we ask for a table. He now gets a look of disgust and tells us to sit over there, pointing off in the general direction of an empty table and says he will get someone else to wait on us. Maybe he thought celiac was contagious. So we had a pitcher of sangria (good) and a couple different dishes (just okay), paid our bill and then headed back to the hotel. Not a good start.

We tried to see all the big touristy things beginning with the park across from our hotel. Retiro Park is a large Central Park style of park. The park is massive and fortunately we were able to walk through it on a Sunny Saturday. The park is amazing, lots to see and do, from museums to street performers, but the best of all is the people watching.

We entered from near our hotel and after a short walk we found ourselves by a lake that you could easily walk around. The large walkway next to it was lined with street performers. Their were musicians, puppeteers, jugglers, and everything you could think of. The highlight for me was the old puppeteer siting on the ground with his puppets in front of him and a cigarette dangling from the side of his mouth. I had to snap a picture.

We went to one of the free museums and checked out the modern art exhibits. I can now safely say I am not a cultured guy. Most of the exhibits I would have filed under “WTF?” as I had no clue what the point of them was. I think my old co-worker from my gas station days, art major Chuck, would have been happy here.  I didn’t get it. We did see one interesting exhibit inside a large glass building. It was a trailer that held an odd assortment of miniatures and full size items depicting…something, Didn’t understand it but I enjoyed looking at it.

The park had lots of pathways, which we walked, including a rose garden, that we strolled through. This led to us becoming very thirsty and hungry. Which is where the food fun continued. We walked up to one of the kiosks and when the lady behind the counter asked us what we liked, we once again explained about our need for gluten free, and the smile that was on her face immediately turns to disgust and then she points to the tables outside and says she will get someone else to help us. Obviously we weren’t her kind of customers. This time we left and went and had an ice cream by the lake and called it a day. For dinner we just hid in the hotel and ate at their restaurant.

The next day we went to El Prado museum. What an incredible collection of art, again not for me, although I tried. We walked for hours looking at hundreds of pictures of basically some famous or infamous person standing or sitting in period attire. Before long they all began to look the same and I became quite numb to the whole thing. After several hours of this I finally turned to Helen and said “Okay the museum wins, I can’t take any more lets get out of here”. Thankfully she agreed. We went back to the hotel and relaxed for a bit, while there we tried to hunt up some gluten free options for food. I was dying to try Tapas. Helen ended up finding us a place that ended up being a bit of a hike from the hotel. This place turned out to be fantastic.

Taberno La Concha in Madrid turned in to the best meal we had in the city. It was a bit of a walk from our hotel but well worth it. They set us in their basement, probably to keep us away from all the locals that would be coming in later. And handed us a menu. And the best part was the page of gluten free Tapas that they had, we didn’t know where ot begin. I don’t remember what we ordered. But I loved all of it. And the best part was that they didn’t look at us in disugust when we asked for the gluten free menu!!

We also toured the Royal Palace of Madrid, which was nice and was a great way to wind up our time in Madrid. The next morning we headed to the airport to fly to Rome in preparation for our first cruise aboard the Norwegian Jade.

Road Trip 2016

4 Aug

Yesterday we flew to St Louis so that Helen and my sister Bobbi could attend their Younique convention. I hadn’t really given our flight out much thought, thinking we would just fly there and after her convention begin a 3 1/2 week roadtrip up through New England.

All was fine on our first leg from San Luis Obispo to Phoenix, except for the having to get up at 4 in the morning to catch a 6:15 flight. We made it to Phoenix and our 8:54 flight had been delayed until 9:30, then 10:30, and finally 11:30. So our 50 minute layover was extended to 3 hours. That in and of itself wasn’t too bad, but when I realized that a significant portion of the passenger manifest was filled with Younique conventioneers, it made the layover a little more disturbing as they all began talking about ther uplines and yada, yada, yada. Fortunately I was so tired I fell asleep and when I woke up the youniquers around us had moved on. Also being in first class, I was nowhere near them as we flew to St. Louis. So a rather peaceful flight once we took off in our really old A320 aircraft.

When we arrived we collected our bags in the normal fashion, 2 bags showed up immediatley and 1 bag took forever, and headed off to pick up the rental car. I thought it was great that I had just gotten notice that Avis had upgraded me to a Cadillac XTS, what a great way for us to road trip! So we took the shuttle bus over to avis and the driver kindly dropped us off right in front of our car. We put the bags at the trunk  and I popped open the door to get the keys and release the trunk. So I looked in the cupholder, the glovebox and the armrest storage, no key. I did find the Avis sheet that said it was my car, I guess they just didn’t want me driving it. Fortunately as a Presidents club member I was able to just pick a different car and change it as I drove off. So now we will be roadtripping in a Lincold MKS, Mathew McConaughey would be pleased.

This is my second trip to the city, with time to sightsee,  so there isn’t much I want to see. Although we did go to the Gateway arch and rode to the top. Went at night which was pretty cool. Unfortunately there is a lot of construction going on which sort of ruins the visual effect at ground level.

Today is the first day of their convention so I chose to just hide out in the concierge lounge and type. Felt good.

We’re off to Europe to celebrate our 35th Anniversary!! – The Beginning

21 May

Following the Christmas holiday Helen and I decided we needed to do something different to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. So we decided we would take a cruise and never wanting to do the simple thing. We chose a cruise of the Eastern Mediterranean on the Norwegian Jade (http://www.ncl.com/cruise-ship/jade).

The only issues being that the cruise left out of Rome and ended 2 days before our Anniversary. So I would solve the easy issue by convincing Helen to stay in Rome for 4 additional days after the cruise at the Marriott Gran Flora Hotel.  Because of the cost of the hotel I knew I would have to have a good argument for why we should stay at this hotel for such an expensive rate. I spent hours preparing my argument, doing lots of research on Tripadvisor and other sites until I was ready. So I turned to Helen on the couch and began to introduce the idea of staying in Rome at this particular hotel and said

“Sweetheart, I think we should extend our stay by 4 days in Rome so we can be celebrate our anniversary. Also I found us a real nice hotel, it’s expensive but it is a Marriott and I think we would like it.”

She Said “okay” and went back to her IPad.

Now the second issue was getting to Rome. I admit I am a bit spoiled when it comes to air travel, and vowed never again to fly coach to Europe. Naturally tickets in to Rome were over $3,000 per person. So I needed to find a cheaper way to get to Rome. Thank god for my Skyscanner app, it makes the hunting that much easier. Well for some unknown reason one day Madrid pops into my mind, so I look and I can save over $1,000 per person if we fly in an out of Madrid. And checking into RyanAir, lo and behold it’s less the $200 to fly Roundtrip from Madrid to Rome. So I looked at Helen and said we are going to Madrid!! So I book our flights on KLM and we are ready to go.

We drove down the night before and stayed at the LAX Marriott where we woke up the next morning to catch our flight to Madrid. Since we were flying on an international carrier I made sure to allow us extra time to get through ticketing and security. Unfortunately as we prepared to leave the airport I get a notice from KLM that our flight is being delayed by a couple of hours. So now we have LOTS of time to get through screening. About an hour later we get an e-mail from Air France that tells us that our flight will be leaving at 3:00 pm. Which is strange since we are flying there on KLM. That is until the note from KLM arrives 10 minutes later and tells us our flight has been cancelled.

Going through security in the Bradley Terminal we entered shop area and I have to admit it was pretty cool. There was a tower that displayed videos and pictures.

WP_20150108_007 WP_20150108_009 WP_20150108_008 Waiting to start our trip

We eventually boarded our flight and prepared for the journey.

Being the smart, thoughtful, and cautious man that I am; I decided that on the trip over I was not going to be gluten free, as a test on my sensitivity.  After all I am on a French airline, can you imagine how good the food and the bread is going to be?! So I started with a good scotch and then had a roll with my appetizer and then a roll with my dinner and then I became violently nauseous. And like Rosanne Rosanna Danna I thought I was going to die!! Needless to say I freaked Helen out and she got zero sleep as she kept checking on me.  Fortunately after a couple of hours it began to pass and by the time we landed I was fine. I guess I at leased proved that I need to stay away from Gluten.

When we landed in Paris, we had to change flights so we  tramped off the plane with everyone else and began to follow the herd. They made a few announcements that we couldn’t understand. But what’s it matter, after all they will have signs we can follow, We thought…

After getting lost once, we finally managed to make it to our terminal where we fortunately had an uneventful flight to Madrid. We landed in Madrid where our driver picked us up and took us into the city, straight to our Hotel.

Next up – I know why they call it Madrid.

Living the Alaskan Dream – Nightmare on Elm Street Style

12 Aug

Well after a week in Alaska for work it was time to head home. The plan was to leave work on Friday at 10:30 am Alaskan Time and drive through the countryside during the next 15 hours before Dawn, a member of my team, and I caught our flight home at 1:30 AM. We were ready to see the natural majesty and wildlife of Alaska. The vistas were incredible, a normal photograph couldn’t do it justice so I ended up taking nothing but panoramas. And while the vistas were magnificent, the wildlife didn’t come through. Or more accurately the large wildlife failed to materialize. Awesome plan, went like clockwork for the first 10 hours. Leaving the base we headed south along the Richardson Highway, and through the Alaskan Mountain Range.

We turned right at the Denali Highway and head across the state heading towards Denali National Park. It was 133 miles of road, which doesn’t sound too bad until you realize that most of it is unpaved. Now before we started this adventure I heard from several of the local people that 20 miles of it was paved on both sides which left only 93 miles of gravel. Not a problem. Also one of my coworkers suggested that we take his home phone number so that we could call him if we had car trouble during the gravel road trip. Now we thought that was awfully cool and nice of him. Little did we know…

It was during this drive we learned a very unnerving fact. Alaskans lie to us Southerners and let’s face it to Alaskans we are all Southerners. It turns out that the Denali Highway is 20 miles paved on the Eastern side and only 2 miles on the Western side. Which left me with 111 miles of gravel and when you are looking forward to getting off the gravel those extra 18 miles can take forever. I guess we should have figured it out ahead of time, when we were checking the map and noticed that the town of Cantwell was at the western end of the Denali Highway. Problem was we didn’t know that on the map that Cantwell stood for can’t well tell them Southerners the truth….

But meanwhile back at the drive. The Denali Highway is worth the time in the summer. The views were amazing and you can see a glacier at the distance. It’s Amazing.  There is very little traffic on that Highway and some of it isn’t too bright. Like the guy pulling a camping trailer with a shredded tire. A gas station with some services was 5 miles behind him but instead he continued going forward at about 25 miles an hour to the next services which was a hundred miles away. Or the guy with the camper who for about 10 miles didn’t bother to pull over and let the string of cars behind him pass. Or that you need to watch your step for behind every tree and bush you could be stepping into some ones toilet and from my brief experience many people did.

Now as to the wildlife, we saw a baby and mama moose on the base, so we figured our chances of seeing more moose or elk was pretty good when we were off the main roads. Turns out not to be the case, we drove about 300miles and the only wildlife we saw were mosquitos. Should you make the mistake and pull off at the wrong spot, you will be surrounded by those little buggers in a heartbeat. When this happened to us I fortunately had brought along some mosquito bait. So I was able to walk out a bit to try and take a great  picture, unfortunately it was at that moment my bait failed me, Dawn jumped back in the car to get away from them. So the second she climbed in the car I swear I heard NEXT, and they attacked me in mass. Before I knew it I was running for the car, without my super photo, swatting like a crazy man.  When I made it to the car, I hopped in, started the engine, rolled down all the windows, and in about 5 seconds I was doing 60 on the gravel road, praying that the hitchhikers would be sucked out of the car and we would be left in peace. No luck, we ended up having to hunt down about a dozen of them on our own. Needless to say, we stopped pulling off the road at that point and declared enough! So we didn’t stop again until we bought gas in Cantwell.

Needless to say from now on I am bringing mosquito repellent (or Dawn) with me from now on in the summer months. So from Cantwell we went to Denali National Park and managed to get there just before the park office closed, which we didn’t go into instead we went on a 3 mile hike back into the woods and if you like trees and rivers, this is definitely the spot. We never found  spot to see Mt McKinley and discovered only after we left that when we hit Cantwell we should have turned left to go to a viewing location. Oh well, next time. The Hike was at least fun, except for the last little bit that felt like it was straight up.

From Denali we drove back to Fairbanks where we filled the car and decided we were done so we headed for the airport where we checked in, made it through security and at 8:00 PM we waited for our 1:30 am flight. So after a little drinking even less eating and a lot of waiting it was time to board the plane. And this was when Freddy Krueger joined the party.

So we are all loaded everyone is ready to go and then the pilot comes on and tells us that the center tank fuel pumps aren’t working so it will be a bit while they investigate. It’s at this point I take my short nap, me thinking a quick 30 minute nap will set me up for a nice for the rest of the trip home. So 90 .to worry we are poaching the 6:00 am flights plane. Cool at least we will be getting out of here. So after we all trudge off the plane and start to stand in line to get ourselves rebooked the pilot comes on and says “oh by the way, this crew is at the end of their light window and they can’t get us to Seattle so we will be stopping in Anchorage for a crew change, but don’t worry it won’t be long. We will get off and they will get right on and then you will be back in the air on your way to Seattle”

Okay this kind of stuff happens. And then I notice the board it says we will land in Anchorage a little at 5:50 am and we will land in Seattle at 10:10 am. Wait a minute, 4:00 am Alaskan time until 10:10 Pacific Time is 7 hours and Seattle is about 4 hours from Fairbanks. So what are we doing with all the extra time? WE are sitting on the ground in Anchorage!! Our short 30 – 40 minute sounding layover is actually 2 hours!! But then Alaska Airlines steps up and saves the day, they hand all of us passengers these sweet little postcards that say, “Gee we are sorry about really screwing up your trip, and we feel really, really bad about it, so here if you join our rewards program, we will give a free 2000 miles.”

So we are waiting in line for like 40 minutes waiting to get reticketed when they start boarding the plane.  So 10 minutes later everyone that has been reticketed or just going to Seattle is on the plane and the hostess goes on the PA and tells all us folks who are still in line to get on the plane now so they can leave. Second time she tells us that she adds “you are all being reticketed already in Seattle so we don’t need to wait in line. What!! Are you freaking kidding me!! Where was this little message 50 minutes ago! So now we are back on the plane and heading to Anchorage and the crew comes through with a better offer instead of 2000 miles we will give you a voucher, of unspecified amount, for use on a later flight or more miles. I took the voucher.

So after a wonderful layover in Anchorage, stuck in the plane, we get to Seattle and we are off to get our new tickets for the balance of the trip. So the agent calls us up and tells us great news we have you on flights through Portland that get you back to Santa Barbara, the only slight glitch is the little 5 hour layover in Seattle you will have to endure. CRAP. After lots of struggling we end up with no other options so we begin our day in SeaTac, which will always be remembered for some of the most gawd awful on the planet. Instead of Salsa they used barbecue sauce. I couldn’t finish em, guess they were at least good for my diet, quantity wise. So after doing our best Eric Snowden imitation, we managed to get on our flight to Portland where we endured a reasonable layover before our final flight.

Interesting thing about Portland; outside of its large number of Strip Clubs, this was not personal experience but a Mark and Brian radio fact, was a sign that told you that in Portland there were possibilities in every direction. Seems pretty optimistic, until you realize that they put it on a do not enter sign…

So the last bit of fun we had is that we were originally going to land in Santa Barbara at around 1:00 PM and we were going to pick up a rental car from Avis. So like a good customer I called the Avis desk at Santa Barbara airport to let them know that we were going to be in after 10:00 pm and could they be sure we still had a car. Unfortunately I ended up with the automated message that told me the agent was serving other customers where I was transferred to the Customer Service Center, who told us to contact the counter at the airport. So after our 13th attempt and getting the exact same message each and every time, I finally made the customer service center take my information and update my reservation information with my current flight number, and the said we should still contact the Airport Avis counter. So 12 calls later we talk to customer service again and they look at my updated record and discover that nothing has been updated and it still had all the old flight information. Needless to say I was not a happy camper. So they updated it again and because Dawn and I had such faith in the Avis system, she talked with her husband and made arrangements for him to meet us at the airport, just in case.

Fortunately we landed in Santa Barbara, 25 hours after our flight was scheduled to start, and the agent was still there and I picked up a car to get me home. So while Dawn is a wonderful travelling companion, being funny, articulate and easy to get along with. I think I can do without the 25 hour flights so from here on out she is on her own and if I find we are on the same flights to the same destination again, I am getting off and taking the train…..

North to Alaska

6 Jun

Well I am ending my first trip to Fort Greely, Alaska. What beautiful  country and empty. It was amazing how little traffic there was. Definitely a different experience.

Which I should have guessed when I picked up my rental car. Boeing has a contract with Avis, which is Avis all over the world, in Alaska they have Avis, I know; it’s on the sign in white letters on a red background. So I walk up to the counter to pick up my rental car, and being a frequent renter, I am expecting to get a pretty nice car. So the agent takes my credit card and then says “do you travel a lot to Alaska?”

Okay I can deal with this, she is just being friendly, probably wants to give me a little travel advice. So I say “Well yes starting with this trip I plan to come up every month”

She says ” oh would you like to join our frequent renter program? After 5 rentals you get a free day”

I’m thinking she can’t see that I am an elite member obviously. ” Why no thank you, I am already a member of Avis”

She then says “Oh we’re not part of Avis” Huh? What?

It turns out that someone in Alaska has a Franchise or something, but they aren’t really Avis. So out goes my elite status, no upgrade for me, so instead I get my keys and walk out to my nice not so shiny Subaru Forester. They told me there was a scratch on the front hood  somewhere, there was so much dirt I couldn’t see it.  So I throw my stuff into the car and take off.

The drive is great, lots of cool scenery and no traffic. So after driving south for 90 minutes I pull in at the base and get my housing and as I turn to head back to the car, I meet one of my managers who had stopped by to see if I had made it. Since I had he decided to give me the 25 cent tour.  So he shows me around the base, it takes 10 minutes. Obviously not a big base. He then shows me where Missile Assembly Building is located and the view was incredible, there are no trees any where, just a few buildings so you have an almost unobstructed view of the mountains, it was fantastic, beautiful, awe inspiring, and against base regulations to take a picture. So in this instance it sucks to be anyone that isn’t here seeing it for themselves.

The only other thing that was interesting, was the nighttime, or the lack there of. With it being summer, I knew it stayed lighter longer, just not this lighter and not this longer.  As I type this it’s 10:25 PM on June 6th.

The HTC 8X and Scotland

30 Apr

Using my HTC 8X in Scotland was definitely interesting. Since Verizon is ridiculously expensive for oversees, I switched out the SIM card with one from MAXROAM. These guys are great, they are very responsive and any issues I had with the SIM they took care of within 24 hours.

As a camera the phone took some truly astounding photos This is my favorite

Outdoors the phone worked fantastically, I had a pretty decent data connection almost everywhere we went. The keyword is outdoors. In every city, in every building, if I went in to any building and wasn’t near a window, I lost all connectivity. I had my wife check her Iphone and it usually had a signal in every building I asked. So from a hardware standpoint I don’t think the antenna bands on the 8X are well suited for Scotland.
