As I travel through Scotland I will update this page with links or tidbits of information on how easy (or difficult) it is to enjoy the bounty of Scotland.
One of the websites I am going to try is: http://www.gluten-free-onthego.com/ Will see if it’s as helpful as it appears.
Otherwise I will post my experiences here.
Tried Vitorria Italian at 19 George IV Bridge. It was really good. Well at least mine was. I had the risotto with Asparagus and ham, even Helen thought it was phenomenal. They also had an appetizer called polenta chips that was very good as well.
Helen’s pasta sort of bland, but the pasta wasn’t too bad. It’s just the sauce didn’t really do anything for the dish.

Next night we needed something close to the hotel and found Mums. They are located at 4a Forrest Road, Edinburgh. I had sausages and Mash and Helen had Shepherds pie. Both were good. The sausages were a special treat as you could pick from a variety and I had the Boerwar (okay), the Chorizo (pretty good) and the Hot Mexican (very good). I will tell you from the outside Mums is nothing too impressive, but inside the staff was great and the food was good and filling. Also discovered something called Thistly Cross Cider. Really, Really good. I need to find it in the states.

For our last night in Edinburgh we tried The Mussel and Steak Bar located at 110 West Bow Grassmarket, Edinburgh. The food here was exceptional. We had mussels as an appetizer in a Chili, Ginger, Cumin, and Lime sauce. They were great. Most of the mussels were large and meaty. For dinner Helen had the lamb chops, which were fantastic and I had a steak, very tender. They were very accommodating to our gluten free needs and staff is exceptional.
In Aberdeen at La Tasca – A Tapas Bar/Restaurant. Their menu is very Gluten Friendly, many of their dishes are identified by a small GF if it’s gluten free or there is a gluten free option available. We both ended up with a Paella, mine was seafood and hers was chicken and chorizo. Both were good, not great but good. The Sangria was delicious and we would dine there again.

The next night was an adventure. We went to an Italian place called Mi Amore. After the ease we have had of finding gluten free options everywhere we thought how tough could this be? So we walk in and are greeted by the manager. We ask if they have gluten free pasta, the manager says no, but he can make us chicken. We then ask can we get Risotto, what Italian place doesn’t have Risotto? He tells us no Risotto, but he can make us chicken. We are too tired to go anywhere else So we figure we are destined for chicken. Then a waitress shows up and saves the day. They Do have Risotto. So I ordered a risotto with mushrooms and ham and Helen had a chicken dish. They were both outstanding. It turns out the chef knew what to do and was able to take care of our needs. While I think I came through scot free, I am not sure it is worth the risk if you are really sensitive.
Next meal was at the Waverly in Kyle of Lochalsh. Here the food was FANTASTIC. I had a taste of Scotland (Angus Steak on a bed of Haggis) Helen had Lamb chops. Both were killer. This place only has 6 tables so if you plan to go you should make reservations. True Scottish food and worth the effort to find.
